Speech Therapy
|
Speech therapy involves the treatment of physical or cognitive deficits and disorders that result in difficulty with communication. This includes both speech – making the sounds that make words, and language – understanding written and spoken words and their meanings.
Speech/language pathologists also treat patients who have difficulty with swallowing, memory, safety and problem solving. Through specialized exercises and instructions as well as the use of audio-visual aids, speech/language pathologists can treat a wide range of patients with physical and cognitive impairments that may result from brain injuries, strokes, cerebral palsy or cancer of the throat. Speech/language pathologists also work with patients to improve problem solving, memory and safety as it pertains to everyday tasks and functioning in one’s own home. A prescription from a physician is required for speech therapy treatment.
